On the western
edge of the province of Colón, across the bridge of the
Gatún Locks, are the towns of Escobal, Achiote, Chagres,
Gatún, and the protected area in the ecological park around
the San Lorenzo Fort. These areas are ideal spots for ecotourism
and offer the visitor a huge variety of activities.
Those who are interested in discovering Panamá’s
diverse tropical birds will find countless opportunities to do
so in the Chagres National Park. The protected area around San
Lorenzo is an excellent location for bird watching as well as
exploring local flora and fauna on well-designed pathways thought
the forest.
There are no hotels in these region’s towns, but local residents
are happy to offer lodging in their homes at very reasonable rates.
